Parent Guide to Remote Learning
At Prince Avenue Academy and Nursery, we are committed to ensuring your child’s education continues smoothly, even when they cannot learn with us in person. This guide outlines what you can expect during periods of remote education and how you can support your child at home.
When might remote education be necessary?
This might include:
- Occasions when we decide that opening our school is either:
- Not possible to do safely
- Contradictory to guidance from local or central government
- Occasions when individual pupils, for a limited duration, are unable to physically attend school but are able to continue learning, for example because:
- They have an infectious illness
- They are preparing for or recovering from some types of operation
- They are recovering from injury and attendance in school may inhibit such recovery
- Their attendance has been affected by a special educational need or disability (SEND) or a mental health issue
The school will consider providing pupils with remote education on a case-by-case basis.
What will remote learning look like?
Your child will continue their education at home using a combination of online resources, teacher-led activities, and independent work. Remote education is designed to ensure that learning continues as closely as possible to what would be taught in school.
At Prince Avenue, remote education may include:
- Lessons delivered through Microsoft Teams/Class Dojo
- Recorded or live teaching from teachers
- Set activities and assignments to complete at home
- Feedback from teachers to support progress
Activities will be set using the following websites:
- BBC Bitesize: Excellent interactive lessons across all primary subjects.
- White Rose Maths: Video tutorials and worksheets that match our school maths curriculum.
- Oak National Academy: A full library of high-quality, teacher-led video lessons.
Children in years R-6 will remain in contact with their Class Teacher through Class Dojo while in Nursery this will be through Tapestry and Class Dojo.
Oak Academy and BBC Bitesize have been selected to support remote learning for a number of reasons. Both are in-line with our teaching ethos – they encourage the use of retrieval practice, explicit teaching with high-quality modelling, and the use of deliberate practice. The online lessons from Oak Academy are free to all and offer a recorded taught session so that the children can access physical teaching from a teacher and then access work relating to that lesson within the same website. There are also hundreds of lessons specifically aimed at children with SEND needs and requiring additional support. Class teachers are to use the lessons in the classroom, so children are familiar with the platform before any potential closure.
White Rose Maths resources will be used as they are matched to our current maths curriculum model. Children are very used to seeing these resources.
Spelling Shed and TT Rockstars will all be utilised to support the acquisition and retention of basic core skills.
Class Dojo will remain in use as the communication element has already proved to be invaluable. Teachers and parents will be able to message one another to share information and offer support. The Class Story page will offer the chance for teachers to celebrate children’s work and maintain our school community. Use of Class Dojo will be in-line with the Class Dojo Usage Policy.
Daily Routine & Time Expectations
To maintain a sense of structure, we recommend following a regular school-day routine. The Department for Education suggests the following minimum daily hours for remote learning:
- EYFS (Ages 3-5): Approximately 3 hours per day
- Key Stage 1 (Ages 5–7): Approximately 3 hours per day.
- Key Stage 2 (Ages 7–11): Approximately 4 hours per day.
Balancing Screen Time
We know that staring at a screen all day is not ideal for young learners. Our remote curriculum is carefully balanced:
- Digital Learning: Watching short instructional videos, practising key skills e.g. spellings and times tables.
- Offline Tasks: Reading physical books, writing in workbooks, drawing, conducting science experiments in the kitchen, or completing physical education challenges.
Feedback and Support
- Marking and Assessment: Teachers will review submitted work daily. They will provide digital feedback, praise, and next-steps guidance on core pieces of work.
- Staying in Touch: If your child is struggling with a concept, you or your child can message the teacher directly through our learning platform.
- If a child is not engaging with the work set, we will follow these steps to support those at home to enable work to be accessed, submitted and any concerns around engagement shared.
- Dojo message to the parent/carer and note engagement sheet
- Follow up dojo message and advise of a phone call and note engagement sheet
- Phone call from Class Teacher you and note sheet
- Pass to SLT for contact to be made
Additional support for pupils with particular needs
How will you work with me to help my child who needs additional support from adults at home to access remote education?
Where children would normally receive additional support from SEND agencies or the Care Team at PAAN, the SENDCO will make arrangements for those to continue via Zoom for as long as the agencies engage.
If a child has additional learning needs, the teacher may tailor their work on Google Classroom or via Class Dojo with the support from Oak National Academy or BBC Bitesize. This work will be support by the SENDCO and SEN Team.
No Device? No Problem.
We want to ensure no child is left behind due to a lack of technology or internet access. Please contact the school office immediately if you need:
- To borrow a school-allocated laptop.
